A Naturopathic Detox

Detox [noun dee-toks; verb dee-toks] informal

a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances; detoxification.

When we think of detox or cleanse, the first things we think of is starving ourselves, lemon and chili powder drinks, tiny portions and highly artificial ready made meals as a powder in a tub! I am here to tell you that this perception of a cleanse could not be further from the truth!

It’s a bit odd to think we should deprive the body to enjoy endless energy, glowing skin and oodles of happiness! In truth, when we enjoy a lifestyle rich in whole foods, phytonutrients and a balance of good fats is when we see this beauty and a happiness like no other.

What I love about a cleanse, is that is really isn’t that different to the food I normally eat – fresh, simple and bursting with deliciousness! just the smallest of changes can make the biggest differences!

Every now and then I try and have an extra clean eating day – to nourish, support and cleanse my body! Follow my cleanse on a plate:

There is nothing better than waking up after a restful night sleep and stepping into a little bit of yoga or even a mindful stretch! it gets your blood circulating and invigorates your body for the day ahead.

First up is a warm water and lemon juice! Having lemon juice first thing in the morning boosts digestive acids, supporting our body to break down and utilise the nutrients we eat but also to move toxins through the digestive tract and liver.

Breakfast is a delicious, fresh, seasonal chia seed pudding! Chia seeds are bursting with protein and they are also full of healthy good fats. This is perfect as it helps to keep you full while keeping you nourished. Today I went for fresh papaya, another amazing fruit which naturally supports digestive health!

During a cleanse I always try and boost my nutritional intake, this can be a green veggie juice, salad, soup or broth! once again – listen to what your body is asking for! During my particular cleanse I was craving kale and brussel sprouts – both which are a nutritional powerhouse and support liver detoxification, talk about a win win!

I am a green juice addict! and really a cleanse is just another reason to enjoy a delicious glass of fresh green juice! By having a juice or participating in a full juice cleanse it gives the digestive system a rest and gives you a quick burst of nutrition!

To finish the day there are many yummy things I like to include sometimes it can be a simple organic miso soup or a bowl of steamed greens with fermented veg but on this particular day, I was craving something fresh, nourishing and simple – a quick and easy sweet potato hash + poached egg! Following a cleanse or detox can be one of the most delicious things you will do – it should also fit into your lifestyle so that you can enjoy all these delicious meals any time of the day and time of the month.

Health and Happiness,
