What Happens in a Naturopathic Consultation?

It can be a little bit daunting, meeting a new practitioner, going through your health history but the real intimidating bit can be the prospect of making changes after the consult.

BEFORE THE CONSULTATION

Before we sit down, sip tea and chat health history we gather information. Typically an intake form will include personal information such as date of birth, address and family history.

It will also have questions around your reason for the visit. This takes some of the pressure off on the day of your consultation, makes it easier to remember the facts and the journey that got you to where you are today.

You may also get asked to send through previous pathology results. This gives your practitioner some insight into your current health before the consultation.

IN THE CONSULTATION

Firstly we get comfortable, sip tea and start learning about your health history and what the different body systems are doing. We talk about the digestive system; bowel habits and any symptoms that may be experienced, such as constipation, loose stools, painful bloating. We also cover the reproductive system, adrenal system, hormones, sleep and of course dietary and lifestyle.

In the first consultation we make a plan, we may make dietary suggestions to support overall wellbeing. These suggestions are specific to the individual because no two people are the same, no two health plans should be the same.

Some clients may require further testing such as pathology, stool or saliva testing. Meal diary analysis may also be indicated.

As a naturopath, we are able to support different areas of health. Some of these include, but are not limited to:

  • preconception care
  • fertility + reproductive health
  • hormonal health
  • digestive health
  • skin health (acne, eczema, rashes etc)
  • mood + anxiety
  • sleep + stress

AFTER THE CONSULTATION

This is the perceived ‘hard’ part. When you see a Naturopath it won’t just be ‘take this and see things change’. Often it will include dietary changes and lifestyle changes – this can be hard to adjust but it’s also where the biggest reward is.

We can’t expect our situation to change if we don’t make changes.

You will be provided with a unique health protocol tailored to your specific needs. Over the next couple of weeks, email check in’s are available to see how your progress is going.

THE RETURN CONSULTATION

This is the check-in, typically one to two weeks after your initial consultation to check how progress is going. This is the time to find any challenges that have arisen, improvements found and possibly a refill of herbal medicine or supplements.

Throughout this whole process, email communication is available as a direct line of communication between client and practitioner.
