When Summer Feels Heavy: What Your Body is Trying to Tell You

WORDS: Clair Channing Sense of Self Kinesiology

As we move deeper into summer, I’ve been noticing a clear theme emerging in clinic. So many people are feeling heavier, more sensitive, and more easily overwhelmed than usual.

Even when life seems “fine” on the outside, the body has a quiet and honest way of revealing what we’ve been holding beneath the surface. It speaks through tension, discomfort, exhaustion, and emotional intensity long before we consciously recognise that something needs care.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a strong wave of emotional patterns showing up in both adults and children, and the physical symptoms that naturally follow. I wanted to share a little insight into what I’ve been witnessing in clinic lately.

What I’ve Been Seeing in Kids

I’ve supported so many children recently who are navigating:
• tummy aches
• constipation or withholding
• emotional explosions after school
• sensory overload
• clinginess followed by sudden shutdown
• restlessness or trouble settling at night

For kids, emotions often speak through the body first, especially when they don’t yet have the language or awareness to express what they feel. What may look like “behaviour” is often their nervous system trying to regulate itself.

It’s been beautiful to watch how quickly they shift once their system is supported, grounded, and understood.

Emotional Patterns Showing Up in Adults

1. The Weight of Worry and Mental Load

What sits underneath: worry, responsibility, pressure to hold everything together, fear of letting people down
How the body responds: tight diaphragm, shallow breathing, stomach sensitivity, histamine flares, headaches, jaw tension, disrupted sleep

2. Emotional Reactivity and Quick Overwhelm

Underlying themes: frustration, being misunderstood, unexpressed anger, fear of getting things wrong
Physical expressions: chest tightness, hormone irritation, digestive changes, sudden fatigue, restlessness, nervous system spikes

3. Difficulty Letting Go – Grief, Shame and Old Stories

Emotional roots: grief, sadness, disappointment, resentment, unspoken shame
Body responses: lung tightness, constipation, chest heaviness, shoulder pressure, emotional “stuckness”

4. Not Feeling Good Enough – Self-Judgment and Inner Pressure

Internal landscape: perfectionism, comparison, fear of criticism, overthinking, difficulty resting
Physical signs: throat tightness, solar plexus pressure, headaches, pelvic holding, burnout, feeling ungrounded

5. Womb and Pelvic Holding

Inner reality: fear of vulnerability, past emotional hurt, disconnection from the body, safety in intimacy
Physical signs: pelvic pain, painful sex, endometriosis flare-ups, bloating, hormone fluctuations, lower back tension

Why Summer Brings All of This Up

Summer is outward, bright, social, and full of movement. If your inner world is tired or overwhelmed, this season can make everything feel louder.

You may notice:
• less patience
• more emotional sensitivity
• fatigue after social events
• difficulty grounding
• feeling “full” or overstimulated

This isn’t a sign of weakness. It is simply your body asking for more softness, space, and support.

Your Body Is Communicating — Gently and Clearly

Kinesiology helps release emotional weight, soften the places holding tension, and support the nervous system in finding safety again. When the body feels safe, everything else becomes easier — thinking clearly, regulating emotions, connecting, resting, and healing.

If you’ve been feeling heavier, overwhelmed, or not quite like yourself, this is your reminder that you don’t need to hold everything alone.

I’m here whenever you’re ready.

With care,
Clair Channing
